At CMS, students benefit from a rich and diverse range of instruction designed to complement their academic learning and foster holistic development. In the afternoons, they engage in co-curricular programs led by specialists in their respective fields, providing opportunities to explore new interests and enhance existing skills. These programs include American Sign Language, Computer Science, Farm School, French language instruction, Mindfulness, Movement, and Music. Each of these areas promotes creativity, skill development, physical wellness, and emotional resilience, offering students a well-rounded education that nurtures both their intellectual and personal growth. By participating in these class offerings, students develop a deeper sense of curiosity, confidence, and collaboration that extends far beyond the classroom. Each of these programs strive to integrate in to the current classroom curriculum and to each other curriculum fostering a sense of global citizenship and cultural awareness. These experiences help cultivate empathy and understanding, preparing students to engage thoughtfully and respectfully with the diverse world around them.
This class introduces students to the fundamentals of ASL, focusing on visual communication through hand signs, facial expressions, and body movements. In this class, students learn basic vocabulary, grammar, and syntax unique to ASL, as well as cultural aspects of the Deaf community. Instruction often includes practice in fingerspelling, number signs, common phrases, and conversation techniques, with an emphasis on both receptive (understanding) and expressive (signing) skills. The class creates an interactive and immersive environment, encouraging students to develop fluency in a language that is rich in history and culture, while fostering greater awareness and inclusion of Deaf individuals.
At CMS, our classrooms focus on the physical world to develop complex thinking, starting with writing skills, math logic, and hands-on learning before introducing computers. Rather than passively using technology, children are prepared to create and adapt it to their needs. They learn foundational concepts like the abacus, binary numbers, and the history of computation before using calculators or computers. This approach helps them understand that a computer is a tool to achieve their vision, not just consume information. By building their own computers, coding games, and practicing touch typing, they gain computer literacy alongside deep knowledge of math and logic. As they progress, they will program robots and explore mathematical programming, laying the groundwork for future studies in coding, engineering, and scientific inquiry. This holistic approach integrates mathematics, language, history, and social science, equipping children with the tools to succeed academically and become creative thinkers and leaders in the future.
Farm School at Classen Montessori brings Montessori philosophy to life by immersing students in hands-on, nature-based learning that fosters independence, curiosity, and a deep respect for the environment. Students engage directly with nature by tending the school garden, caring for chickens, and exploring ecosystems, which helps them develop practical skills and a lasting connection to the natural world. The curriculum covers a range of topics including botany, plant relationships, the roles of insects and pollinators, and ecological conservation, allowing students to explore the interconnectedness of life. Through activities like keeping nature journals and learning about traditional ecological knowledge, students practice mindfulness, observation, and a sense of responsibility toward the earth. By emphasizing gratitude and stewardship, Farm School nurtures empathy, global citizenship, and a strong sense of reciprocity with the environment. This unique program offers students a meaningful and enriching opportunity to grow as learners and environmental stewards, preparing them to become thoughtful, responsible citizens.
Children are introduced to basic French vocabulary and phrases through engaging, interactive activities. The class emphasizes everyday words and expressions related to greetings, colors, numbers, and familiar objects, allowing children to build a foundational understanding of the language. Along with visual aids, songs, and simple games, the use of music and movement helps reinforce the language in a fun and memorable way. This approach encourages active participation and creates a lively learning environment where young learners can confidently explore the basics of French while developing their listening and speaking skills.
Mindfulness is naturally embedded in the Montessori method, with uninterrupted work cycles promoting concentration, and guides modeling intentionality through purposeful actions and communication. The carefully prepared environment and lessons grounded in present-moment awareness further enhance this mindful atmosphere. However, the mindfulness program at CMS, introduced in 2020 and taught by our school psychologist with 20 years of experience, is specifically designed to teach intentional mindfulness. While the Montessori classroom fosters mindfulness organically, this program provides structured guidance to help students develop a deeper, more deliberate practice. Children’s House students learn to recognize and regulate their emotions while cultivating compassion for others. Elementary students build on this foundation through meditation, learning emotional regulation, introspection, and empathy. Middle School students deepen their self-awareness, expanding it to a collective consciousness and integrating their personal growth with an understanding of their place in the world.
The Movement program focuses on developing both physical fitness and overall well-being through a variety of dynamic activities. By incorporating a mix of individual exercises and functional movement patterns, students enhance their strength, flexibility, coordination, and endurance. The program encourages students to challenge themselves physically while promoting teamwork, communication, and resilience. In addition to improving physical health, Movement emphasizes the importance of mental focus and emotional balance, helping students develop a positive attitude toward exercise and lifelong fitness. The integration of mindful practices—such as breathing techniques and mindful movement—supports better concentration and stress management, empowering students to engage more fully in their physical activities and overall health.
A basic music program that emphasizes rhythm, beat, and cooperation helps students develop essential musical skills while promoting teamwork and communication. Through hands-on activities like drumming, clapping, and group performances, students learn to internalize rhythms and beats, which form the foundation of music across genres. By working together in ensemble settings, students practice listening, timing, and collaboration, building a sense of unity and shared purpose. In addition to these skills, the program introduces students to diverse musical traditions from around the world, fostering an appreciation for different cultural expressions and encouraging respect for diversity. Through this combination of technical learning and cultural exploration, students gain both musical proficiency and a deeper understanding of global connections.
