Our Guides

In the Montessori classroom teachers are often referred to as “guides.” This is because in Montessori, students lead the way by showing interest and skill in the work of the classroom while the teacher guides their interests through the curriculum. The Montessori curriculum and materials are designed to entice students to engage independently in the work of the classroom with the help of a Montessori trained guide, rather than the student being expected to work on the teachers timeline. Students in our classrooms are partners with the guides in discovering their education and growing their skills. Each student has a customized and individual education plan that meets their academic and social/emotional needs. They are allowed to progress through the curriculum at their own pace. This often results in an accelerated learning environment for the child.

Teachers are the most important factor in student achievement. All of our guides are American Montessori Society certified or working towards Montessori certification. CMS is an AMS affiliate school, and is working towards full AMS Accreditation. We are proud of the cultural and geographic diversity of our teaching staff, which brings us a truly global educational environment. Our average student-teacher ratio is 11 to 1.

Shayla Williams

Lower Elementary and Middle School Assistant

With CMS since 2017

I split my childhood between Florida and Oklahoma before returning to OK as a pre-teen and calling it home. I joined the CMS family in the fall of 2017 as an assistant in LE and transitioned to UE as the community returned to in-person in fall of 2020. I haven’t looked back since. The spark that Montessori lights in children to be the learners they were born to be is beautiful and worth supporting. I’m currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and English. When I’m not at school, as a student or a teacher, I spend my time crocheting, hiking with friends and family, reading and writing in equal measure, and cooking.
