Mindfulness is a natural component of the Montessori method. The uninterrupted work cycle promotes concentration and focus. The guides model intention by being purposeful when they speak, move, and teach. The prepared environment is set up with purpose and meaning. And each lesson is given with present moment awareness.
In addition to the mindful nature of the Montessori classroom, CMS began a mindfulness program in 2020, taught by our school psychologist, who has been practicing and teaching mindfulness for 20 years.
Our Children’s House students learn to recognize their feelings and control their breathing. They learn to recognize other’s feelings and how to be compassionate to others.
Our Elementary students continue to build on their mindfulness foundation through meditation. They learn how to find peace and calm inside themselves. They begin to learn what emotions are and how to regulate them. They begin to practice introspection and learn about themselves. They also build their empathy for those around them and work on understanding different perspectives.
Our Middle School students are developmentally ready to deepen their introspection. These older students learn how to expand their awareness of the self to the awareness of the collective. They work on integrating their personal work with finding meaning in their place in the world.
